Artificial intelligence will become part of the training of historians: RIO is preparing recommendations for universities

The Russian Historical Society (RIS), together with the Russian Ministry of Science and Higher Education, will develop methodological recommendations for universities on the use of artificial intelligence tools in the work of research historians. This was stated by the Chairman of the Russian Historical Society Sergei Naryshkin at the XIV General Meeting of the RIO, in which the Rector of the Kyrgyz-Russian Slavic University Sergei Volkov took part. The event was timed to coincide with the 160th anniversary of the founding of the Imperial Russian Historical Society.According to Sergei Naryshkin, the development of artificial intelligence technologies requires updating approaches not only to scientific research, but also to the training of future historians.«The development of higher historical education and improving the quality of teaching the "History of Russia" course in non-historical areas of training remain key priorities for RIO. Experts agreed that part of the basic skills of a research historian today is mastering tools based on artificial intelligence technologies. Following the development of the methodology of historical science, historical education should also change. Together with the Russian Ministry of Education and Science, we plan to develop appropriate methodological recommendations for universities», said Sergei Naryshkin.He emphasized that artificial intelligence opens up new opportunities for analyzing and processing historical sources, including archival documents. One of the largest projects will be preparations for the 300th anniversary of the birth of Empress Catherine II. Together with the companies «Yandex», «Sber» and Rosarkhiv, it is planned to implement a project to recognize documents of the Catherine era using artificial intelligence technologies.Sergei Naryshkin noted that the XIV General Meeting of the Russian Historical Society is being held in the year of the 160th anniversary of the Imperial Russian Historical Society, which made a significant contribution to the development of domestic historical science, increasing the accessibility of archival heritage and historical education.«Today, the Russian Historical Society unites more than 180 leading historical organizations. These are the largest museums, higher education institutions, archives, libraries and academic institutes. In addition, our leading historians and popularizers of historical knowledge are members of the society. In total, more than a thousand people», noted Sergei Naryshkin.According to him, under the auspices of the Russian Historical Society, numerous scientific, historical and educational projects are annually implemented aimed at preserving historical heritage, developing historical science and popularizing reliable historical knowledge.Deputy Minister of Science and Higher Education of Russia Konstantin Mogilevsky noted that the development of artificial intelligence is already changing historical science and approaches to training specialists.«When discussing the future of higher history education, it should be borne in mind that historical science itself is also experiencing profound changes today. New opportunities for its development are associated with the development of artificial intelligence, with a new quality of mass processing of historical sources, including archival materials», he said.Konstantin Mogilevsky also said that following the results of the National Forum of History Teachers, the Russian Ministry of Education and Science will monitor the quality of teaching compulsory discipline «History of Russia» in all universities in the country. In addition, in the new academic year the number of budget places in historical specialties will increase to 6,162 - almost 400 more than a year earlier.
