The monument to Semenov-Tyan-Shansky was unveiled on the eve of the scientist’s 200th anniversary

In the city of Balykchy, the grand opening of a new city park and monument to the outstanding Russian explorer, geographer and traveler Pyotr Semenov-Tyan-Shansky took place.The ceremony was attended by representatives of state authorities and local governments, the Russian Embassy in Kyrgyzstan, Rossotrudnichestvo, the scientific community and educational organizations. The Kyrgyz-Russian Slavic University was represented at the event by Advisor to the Rector Nikolai Kudryavtsev and Head of the Center for Historical and Cultural Heritage Leonid Sumarokov.Speaking at the ceremony, participants noted Semenov-Tian-Shansky's contribution to the study of the Tien Shan and Issyk-Kul region, as well as his role in the development of scientific ties between Kyrgyzstan and Russia. The opening of the monument is timed to coincide with the upcoming 200th anniversary of the scientist’s birth in 2027.On behalf of KRSU, Nikolai Kudryavtsev presented the representative of the plenipotentiary representative of the President of the Kyrgyz Republic in the Issyk-Kul region and the leadership of the Balykchy mayor's office with copies of the national epic «Manas» as a symbol of respect for the cultural heritage of the Kyrgyz people and strengthening humanitarian ties between Kyrgyzstan and Russia.As Leonid Sumarokov noted, the monument to Semenov-Tyan-Shansky is not only a tribute to the memory of the outstanding scientist and traveler, but also a symbol of many years of scientific, cultural and humanitarian interaction between the two countries. According to him, preserving historical memory and popularizing common cultural heritage remains an important part of Kyrgyz-Russian cooperation.The new city park and the monument to Pyotr Semenov-Tyan-Shansky became another public space designed to preserve historical memory and emphasize the importance of the scientific heritage of the great explorer for Kyrgyzstan and Russia.
