As part of the discussion "GeoConnect: how geography united 129 countries of the world", held by the Russian Geographical Society as part of the World Youth Festival, the rector of KRSU Denis Fomin-Nilov made a proposal to open a branch of the Russian Geographical Society in Kyrgyzstan.
Fomin-Nilov noted the historical connection between Russia and Kyrgyzstan in the field of geography, pointing to the research of the territory of Kyrgyzstan, Lake Issyk-Kul and the Tien Shan mountains by Russian geographers back in the 19th century. He also noted that in 1980, the VII Congress of the Geographical Society of the USSR was held in the city of Frunze (now Bishkek), which contributed to the development of geography in the republic.
"Given the history of our relations, accumulated experience and close ties between our countries, it is logical to talk about opening a branch of the Russian Geographical Society in Kyrgyzstan. This decision seems extremely promising," Fomin-Nilov emphasized.
Over 13 years, the Society has allocated about 2.5 billion rubles for grants. At the same time, a significant share was aimed at supporting projects implemented by international and youth organizations.
—If you analyze the life path of famous travelers, it turns out that they made their main geographical discoveries before the age of 35. It turns out that geography — is a science for young people, — noted First Deputy Executive Director of the Russian Geographical Society Ilya Gurov. The opening of a branch of the Russian Geographical Society in Kyrgyzstan could be an important step in deepening scientific cooperation between the two countries and contribute to the development of geographical research in the region.
