KNU celebrated the 130th anniversary of linguist Evgeny Polivanov
June 10, 2021 at the Kyrgyz National University named after. Zh. Balasagyn hosted the International Scientific Conference «Free Discussion on Language and the Dynamics of the Development of Language Processes», dedicated to the 130th anniversary of the brilliant Russian and Soviet linguist-Turkologist Evgeniy Dmitrievich Polivanov.
The conference was attended by researchers of the scientific heritage of E. Polivanov, famous public figures from Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Poland, Russia, Uzbekistan, and Ukraine. They presented the results of research into the life and scientific activity of the outstanding scientist, discussed the problems of the current state and development of linguistics, literary criticism, translation studies, and language teaching methods.
Speakers at the plenary session were: President of the Association of Russian Studies of the Kyrgyz Republic, Professor of KTU «Manas» Z. Derbisheva, Associate Professor of St. Petersburg State University A. Andronov, Professor of the Uzbek State University of World Languages M. Dzhusupov; Senior Researcher of the National Academy of Sciences of the Kyrgyz Republic M. Dzhumaza. The vice-rector of KRSU L. Sumarokov made a report «Yudakhin – Polivanov: friendship sealed by science».
KNU scientists thoroughly prepared for the conference, which contributed to its effective work and open and fruitful discussion. On the occasion of an important event, the university published a collection of articles by conference participants «Free discussion about language and the dynamics of the development of language processes», which contains publications by KRSU employees. The leading article in the new book «The Personality of a Scientist and the Creation of a Young Culture» was written by Professor V. Shapovalov. The role of Evgeny Polivanov in the formation of the Uzbek literary language was discussed on the pages of the collection of Candidate of Historical Sciences. L. Sumarokov and Doctor of Historical Sciences O. Sumarokova.
This did not end the participation of KRSU in the event: senior lecturer at the Department of Russian Language at the University I. Peshekhonova masterfully conducted the section meeting «Language contacts and problems of linguistics».
The forum participants decided:
– continue the tradition of international Polivanov conferences, started in 1964 in Samarkand;
– carry out work to search for handwritten materials by E. Polivanov, describe archival funds, and prepare for publication of his unpublished works;
–support initiatives to open specialized centers and offices named after E. Polivanov in universities and other educational and scientific institutions;
– petition to name the square located on the site of the Kyrgyz Research Institute of Cultural Construction after E. Polivanov.
The conference participants expressed gratitude to its organizers for their creative approach and the high scientific and methodological level of the forum.
