Since 1974, student teams began to take part in the construction of the BAM (Baikal-Amur Mainline), as it was called – construction of the century. Teams of not only builders appeared, but also doctors, restorers, and railway carriage conductors. In total, during the years of the existence of the student group movement from 1959 to 1991, almost 13 million boys and girls took part in their work.
The legal successor of the All-Union Student Teams that existed before 1991 was the youth all-Russian public organization – Russian Student Teams (MOOO «RSO»), established in 2004 under the auspices of the Department of Youth Policy of the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation. The range of areas in which modern student teams are created has expanded: construction, pedagogical, guides, service, agricultural, medical, specialized, and labor teams for teenagers.
In the Kyrgyz Republic, the first student construction team was created in 1966 to participate in the reconstruction of Tashkent after the devastating earthquake. The detachment was formed from students of the construction and civil engineering faculties of the Frunzensky Polytechnic Institute, consisting of 25 people. The detachment, called «Ikar», worked for 3 months on the construction of a large complex of kindergarten-nursery together with students from other cities of Russia and other union republics.
