An expert seminar «Russia and Kyrgyzstan in the new international conditions: challenges, opportunities, prospects» was held in Bishkek
An expert seminar was held at the Kyrgyz-Russian Slavic University (KRSU) «Russia and Kyrgyzstan in the new international conditions: challenges, opportunities, prospects». The event was organized by KRSU and the Institute of World Economy and International Relations of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IMEMO RAS).
Russia strives to consolidate bilateral contacts with the countries of Central Asia and develop trade and economic cooperation with the states of the region. At the same time, the security environment is transforming in Central Asia, and new challenges are emerging that require expert analysis and response. In the context of transformations taking place in the societies of the countries of Central Asia and Russia, it is necessary to jointly comprehend the dynamics of socio-political and ideological-value changes.
The workshop discussed the following key issues:
- Russian-Kyrgyz relations at the present stage: promising areas, strengths, limiting factors and risks;
- Threats of terrorism and religious-ideological extremism in the region, opportunities for cooperation between Moscow and Bishkek on security issues;
- Activity of extra-regional actors in Central Asia;
- Water and energy problems in the region;
- Major energy and transportation projects as potential drivers of economic cooperation between Russia and Kyrgyzstan;
- Socio-political and ideological-value transformations and their impact on relations between Russia and Kyrgyzstan.
Rector of KRSU Denis Fomin-Nilov told his colleagues about the university’s plans and scientific activities. In turn, the director of IMEMO RAS Fedor Voitolovsky noted: «We do not have a large team today, but a very representative one. We are interested in developing cooperation. We are not a university, we are a research institute. We came to find new authors for our journals that have Higher Attestation Commission accreditation. We are engaged in applied analytics, work with government authorities and large companies, and also conduct expert consultations in the field of economics, politics and international relations. About 300 researchers work at our institute. We are actively developing and came to KRSU with serious intentions. We want to be friends at home. Our institute develops not only scientific, but also educational activities. We are launching a master's program starting in September».
The seminar became an important platform for discussing current issues and strengthening partnerships between Russia and Kyrgyzstan.
