KRSU helps the Bishkek City Hall in the fight against smog
The Bishkek City Hall has launched a pilot project to install automotive catalysts to reduce air pollution. The Scientific Center of the Kyrgyz-Russian Slavic University (KRSU) is taking part in the research part of the project. Director of the center, professor of the Department of Road Transport, Doctor of Technical Sciences Dmitry Glazunov noted that catalysts play a key role in reducing harmful emissions.
According to research, about 30% of pollutants in the atmosphere of Bishkek come from road transport. One of the reasons is the lack of catalysts or their wear. Buying a new part costs car owners from 10 thousand soms, which makes it inaccessible to many.
As part of the experiment, the mayor's office installed Chinese catalysts for five cars. Drivers who took part in the project note an improvement in engine dynamics and a reduction in engine load. However, an objective assessment of the effectiveness of these devices will require a large-scale test.
«The point of catalysts is that they promote the afterburning of unburned hydrocarbons, which negatively affect the atmosphere. In modern engines, the mixture formation process is set at a high level, but without a catalyst, harmful substances are released into the air in full», — explained Dmitry Glazunov.
If the project shows good results, it is planned to expand it and mass install catalysts. This could be an important step in the fight against smog in Bishkek. KRSU's participation in the initiative confirms the significance of scientific research and the university's contribution to solving the city's environmental problems.
