Guarding human rights
On December 13, under the leadership of the SDG Youth Envoy to the Kyrgyz Republic Danil Tsoi, with the support of the UN system, the Department of Theory and History of State and Law of the Kyrgyz-Russian Slavic University (KRSU) and the American University of Central Asia (AUCA), the International Student Scientific and Practical Conference «Human Rights through the Prism of the Sustainable Development Goals», dedicated to the 73rd anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
The purpose of the event is – to increase the involvement of young researchers and public leaders in the active phase of actions in the field of project and scientific activities to protect and defend human rights and promote the Sustainable Development Goals.
The conference in two sections «Social and economic human rights» and «Civil and political human rights» was attended by 26 students and undergraduates from universities in the Kyrgyz Republic, the Russian Federation and the People's Republic of China.
Members of the commission for evaluating the participants' reports were representatives of the teaching staff of KRSU and AUCA, experts and specialists from the International Labor Organization, the UN Development Program, the UN Population Fund and the Office of the Permanent Coordinator of the UN System in the Kyrgyz Republic, totaling 12 people.
Participants demonstrated a high level of academic and scientific training, and also practiced conducting small-scale research, proposing solutions to problems for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals in the context of the fundamental concept of human rights.
At the end of the event, the students received feedback from the commission members and their first extensive experience in conducting research work.
According to the results of the conference, 3rd place in the section «Social and economic human rights» was taken by KRSU student Naira Raimkulova with a report «Tailings ponds in Kyrgyzstan and the problem of ensuring environmental rights».
The winners of the conference received prize packages from the UN system and the right to publish their report as a scientific article in the journal «Bulletin KRSU».
