Russia and Kyrgyzstan will train specialists in nuclear medicine

3 april 2025

Tomsk Polytechnic University and Kyrgyz-Russian Slavic University named after B.N. Yeltsin agreed on cooperation in the field of training specialists for the Center for Nuclear Medicine, which is planned to be implemented with the participation of «Rosatom»

The memorandum of cooperation was signed within the framework of an educational seminar «Nuclear medicine: trends and advantages, status and development plans in Kyrgyzstan», organized by the Kyrgyz-Russian Slavic University named after B.N. Yeltsin (KRSU) together with the state corporation «Rosatom» and Tomsk Polytechnic University (TPU). Universities plan to develop cooperation in the field of creating joint master's degree educational programs, including in the field of «Nuclear Medicine (medical physics)». The new master's program will allow young specialists to gain fundamental knowledge in the field of nuclear medicine, radiation oncology and diagnostics, as well as master advanced technologies of radiation therapy and radiopharmaceuticals.

«Tomsk Polytechnic University, being a flagship university of the state corporation, has been training personnel for the Russian nuclear industry for 75 years. And we have extensive experience in training personnel for «Rosatom» projects in foreign partner countries. Currently, projects in the field of nuclear medicine are actively developing in Kyrgyzstan. And Tomsk Polytechnic is one of the recognized centers for the development of technologies in this area. Together with partners at TPU, we create and produce unique radiopharmaceuticals for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer, we develop a breakthrough direction in oncotheranostics, train medical physicists, develop modern VR simulators, specialized software and databases for specialists», – says acting TPU Rector Leonid Sukhikh.

The Kyrgyz Republic is interested in significantly building capacity to combat cancer, cardiological, neurological, endocrine and other socially significant diseases. Last year, with the support of the IAEA and in cooperation with «Rosatom», on the basis of the National Center for Oncology and Hematology under the Ministry of Health of Kyrgyzstan (NCOG MH KR), it was possible to launch the clinical work of the nuclear medicine department and conduct the first SPECT studies for patients in the modern history of the country.

«Our focus is on the project to create a full-scale nuclear medicine center on the basis of the National Center for Medical Sciences of the Kyrgyz Republic with a centralized radiopharmaceutical pharmacy, a molecular imaging center and a center for radionuclide targeted therapy and theranostics, – said Doctor of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Oncology and Radiotherapy KRSU, Director of the National Center for Cancer Medicine of the Kyrgyz Republic Nurbek Bukuev. – The project is in a high degree of development, it has already been assigned experimental status, which allows the project to be carried out in accordance with Russian legislation which in turn greatly speeds up the work, since adapting and using ready-made regulatory frameworks and technical solutions significantly saves time and resources. Of course, during the implementation of the project we will need a whole layer of qualified specialists, young scientists and multidisciplinary medical workers involved in the development of nuclear technologies in the country».

«Development of nuclear medicine – this is a strategically important area that opens up new horizons for medicine in Kyrgyzstan. The introduction of advanced technologies for radionuclide diagnostics and therapy will bring the diagnosis and treatment of cancer and other complex diseases to a qualitatively new level. KRSU's cooperation with the State Corporation «Rosatom» and Tomsk Polytechnic University lays the foundation for the training of highly qualified specialists in this field. The signing of an agreement with TPU and the launch of a master's degree in «Nuclear Medicine (Medical Physics)» will create unique educational opportunities for our students, opening access to the best world practices. KRSU aims to become the flagship for engineering and medical education in the region. Our university has already established itself as a leading scientific and educational center, ensuring the integration of science, technology and medicine. We are confident that thanks to this partnership, modern treatment methods will be developed and implemented to improve the quality of medical care in the country. We thank our partners for their trust and support and are confident that joint initiatives will serve as a powerful impetus for the development of nuclear medicine in Kyrgyzstan», – noted acting Rector of KRSU Sergei Volkov.
