By promoting innovation
On March 12, 2020, the Department of World Economy KRSU organized a meeting of the Country Representative of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in the Kyrgyz Republic, Mr. Marat Makaevich Usupov, with students of the Faculty of Economics and the Faculty of International Relations in the conference hall of the main building of the university.
The guest gave a lecture «The role of SDG-9 (Sustainable Development Goal) in addressing issues of inclusive and sustainable development of countries with economies in transition», which was held as part of KRSU membership in the UN Academic Impact Program.
UNIDO is a specialized agency of the United Nations that promotes industrial development to combat poverty, promote comprehensive globalization and environmental sustainability. UNIDO's mission, as set out in the Lima Declaration adopted at the fifteenth session of the UNIDO General Conference in 2013, is to promote and accelerate inclusive and sustainable industrial development (ISID) in developing countries and countries with economies in transition.
M. Usupov noted that UNIDO's mission today is fully reflected in SDG 9 «Building resilient infrastructure, promoting inclusive and sustainable industrialization and innovation».
Within the framework of the Country Partnership Program (CPP) of Kyrgyzstan and UNIDO, the «Strategy for Sustainable Industrial Development 2019-2023» was developed.
Expected results are
• Economic growth, industrial production growth of at least 4.6% per year
• Increasing the influx of foreign investment in modern production technologies
• Diversification of the economy
• Reducing dependence on imports (in energy, construction, etc)
• Improving the quality of goods and services produced, increasing industrial competitiveness
Goals planned to be achieved within 5 years:
• Industrial export growth of at least 4% per year
• Establishment of industrial production clusters (at least 3 sectoral clusters)
• Creation of at least 4 technology parks and industrial zones
• Creation of at least 25 000 new jobs
To date, UNIDO needs to take the following steps:
• Agree with the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic on the final version of the PSP program document
• Obtain the consent of the main donor (Russian Federation)
• Sign the PSP policy document
• Assist the Government of Kyrgyzstan in creating a national coordinating body
• Coordinate within the UN Country Team to join forces in support of the Sustainable Industry Strategy
• Start implementing the PSP in mid-2020
