Vadim Petrovich Tutlis, the beacon of philosophical science of the Kyrgyz Republic, has passed away

20 september 2022

On September 19, 2022, Vadim Petrovich Tutlis, professor emeritus of the Department of Philosophy at KRSU, passed away at the age of 87.

He was one of the representatives of the famous pedagogical dynasty of the Tutlis. Vadim Petrovich had two formations, the first – geological and the second – historical. In 1959 he graduated from the geological department of the Frunze Polytechnic Institute, and in 1963 he graduated from the history department of the Kyrgyz State University (in absentia). After that, as part of geological parties, he devoted several years to mining surveys on the territory of the republic, which did not prevent the geologist, who admired his natural science knowledge, from defending his dissertation in 1967 «The ideological and historical collapse of the compromisers of Semirechye during the preparation and victory of the Great October Socialist Revolution» for the academic degree of Candidate of Historical Sciences at the Institute of History and Ethnology named after. Ch. Valikhanov (Almaty).

Subsequently, he continued the pedagogical path of his illustrious father and teacher, and switched exclusively to teaching, showing himself in a variety of areas of social studies – Russian history, history of the CPSU, scientific communism, political science and, finally, philosophy. At the same time, he repeatedly held high positions in the higher education system: dean of the Faculty of Foreign Languages of the Kyrgyz Women's Pedagogical Institute (1974-1978), dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences of the Frunzensky Polytechnic (1980-1983), head of the lecture group of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Kyrgyzstan (1983-1986).

In 1993, V. Tutlis was one of the ideological founders of a completely unique educational institution in the collapsing educational space of the former Soviet Union – Kyrgyz-Russian Slavic University. At the Slavic University, V. Tutlis worked as an associate professor of the department of humanities, then as an associate professor of the department of psychology and philosophy. Vadim Petrovich, not being a professional philosopher, developed a unique and professional curriculum in philosophy, which the entire Slavic University has been successfully studying for many years. Also in 1994, he developed another, no less important program – on the history of Russian philosophy. The need for its creation was determined by the introduction into KRSU the very next year of its existence of two parallel special courses – the mentioned history of Russian philosophy and the history of Kyrgyz socio-political and philosophical thought. The very idea of this approach reflected the specifics of KRSU as a university of special quality.

Since 1999, Vadim Petrovich headed the Department of Philosophy and Socio-Political Sciences, which, having separated from the Department of Psychology and Philosophy, became one of the leading departments in the republic. He managed to create a cohesive team of highly professional philosophers, political scientists and sociologists. The service of philosophy became his vital work, to which he devoted all his spiritual strength, brilliant knowledge, and teaching talent. Thanks to his knowledge, experience, high moral principles and professionalism, Vadim Petrovich enjoyed well-deserved authority and respect among his colleagues.

The bright memory of Vadim Petrovich Tutlis as a talented teacher, a brilliant leader, a professional in his field, and simply an amazing person will remain in our hearts, and his name will remain in the history of Kyrgyz higher education and the Kyrgyz-Russian Slavic University.

The staff of the Kyrgyz-Russian Slavic University deeply mourns the irreparable loss and expresses sincere condolences to family and friends.
