Lawyers and international affairs specialists KRSU spoke at the Philip Jessup Competition
From September 11, 2020 to April 18, 2021, KRSU students took part in the Philip Jessop International Law Competition.
Philip Jessup Competition –this is the largest and most prestigious competition in public international law, in which students from more than 700 law schools from 100 countries participate (Harvard, Oxford, Peking University, Washington University, Moscow State University, London School of Economics and others). The competition was established in 1959, is held in English and is built on the model of the trial of the International Court of Justice.
Teams prepare the positions of the disputing states in writing and present them in oral arguments, defending the position of the plaintiff or defendant in each round. The judges are foreign experts in international law.
Participation in the competition gives students the opportunity to improve the skills necessary for a successful legal career, in particular, the ability to work in a team and resolve complex legal issues, as well as improving their level of proficiency in oral and written English.
This time the competition was held online through a specially developed program. KRSU was represented by the following participants: Ramilya Almazbekova (4th year student at the Faculty of Law, Department «International and Constitutional Law»), Biyara Jeenalieva (3rd year student at the FMO, Department of International Relations), Elina Salyzhanova (4th year student at the Faculty of Law, Department «International and Constitutional Law»).
Nazira Tursunbaeva, associate professor of the department of international and constitutional law at KRSU, acted as the team's coach, and Nargiza Tashtemirova, a consultant in the field of youth development and law in the Kyrgyz Republic, was invited as a legal consultant.
The KRSU team played 8 qualifying rounds with teams from Uzbekistan (Tashkent State Law University, Tashkent State Institute of Oriental Studies), Ukraine (National University «Kiev-Mohyla Academy»), USA, Michigan (Michigan University), Virginia (University of Washington and Lee), Canada (University of Calgary), China (Hainan University), Mexico (Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education).
Last year, the KRSU team took part in the competition for the first time and reached the finals of the national round, which took place in Tashkent, and then received an invitation to represent Kyrgyzstan in international rounds in Washington (USA).
